Internship opportunity. FinMark Trust is looking for highly driven interns, with a passion for data analysis, data management and reporting, high levels of curiosity for solving complex problems in data and data structures. Our paid internships are flexible and can be structured around your availability and to accommodate your studies, although preference will be given to candidates who have more time available. Applications close on 19 July and the successful intern will be able to start immediately.

Responsibilities of this role: The role of the intern would be to do data cleaning, data structure, compiling metadata, aligning datasets and checking for consistencies. Further, in the data management process, interns are required to keep an audit trail of the codes used. This will include support to research teams where needed, limited desktop-based research; data analysis; copy-editing, structuring of information and data into a clear and usable format; contributing to project outcomes and findings through critical analysis; and report writing. If you are currently completing an Honours or Master’s degree in Statistics or related fields (such as Applied/Mathematical Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial science, Economics, Demography) and are interested in obtaining work experience while studying, you are strongly encouraged to apply.

We are looking for candidates with the following attributes:

  • Advanced English language skills (verbal and written);
  • Good writing and presentation skills;
  • Proficiency in MS office applications;
  • Good quantitative and analytical skills;
  • A strong interest in research-related activities; and
  • Proficiency in Statistical packages – SPSS (preferred), STATA, R or SAS.

Remuneration: The internship package will be structured as follows:

  • Working hours will be no more than 40 hours per week, limited to a maximum of 160 hours a month while foreign nationals can work a maximum of 20 hours per week (with Student permits).
  • Pay rate will be between R75 – R100 per hour depending on experience and qualification.

The internship will consist of a two-day trial period, after which a longer-term contract can be negotiated and structured to fit around any academic constraints.
