'Making financial markets work' … Are we achieving this objective for the lower end of the market?
By
Irma Grundling, FinScope Team, FinMark Trust
FinScope is a research tool that was developed by FinMark Trust in pursuit of its mission of making financial markets work for the poor. FinScope is a demand side survey which creates insight into how people source their income and manage their financial lives. The study achieves a measure and understanding of consumer demand across four categories of financial products namely transactions, savings, credit & loans and insurance. At the same time it also provides insight into issues such as financial literacy, attitudes towards money and money matters, as well as perceptions about financial products and services, and how these factors influence uptake of financial products and services (formal and informal). As the FinScope survey has been implemented in South Africa for 7 consecutive years (2003-2009), and the sample covers the whole adult population – urban and rural, rich and poor – it is a powerful tool to assess the extent to which the objective of “making financial markets work” has been achieved for the lower end of the market. Irma Grundling, is a Senior Advisor in the FinScope implementation team with 30 years of research experience. Since she joined FinMark Trust in 2008, she has provided technical assistance for the implementation of FinScope surveys in 7 African countries.
